Introducing baby to solids is intimidating, especially for first time parents. I had no idea what to start our daughter on. That is why this list of first solids for baby was created, in hopes of helping you with your introduction of solids to your little one.

Best First Solids

1. Cereals

Traditionally in the US most babies start their first solids with rice cereal. This of course doesn’t have to be baby’s first food, but rice, oats, or barley cereals are a great first food. They can be served diluted in a bottle or spoon-fed.

2. Sweet Potato

Sweet potato puree is typically a food that babies like. Cook it up and puree it or mash it with a fork.

3. Applesauce

This is a favorite for lots of babies. You may not want to give your little one fruit right off the bat, but this one is usually a fairly safe bet.

4. Carrots

Pureed carrots are a great first food for baby. This is actually what our daughter’s first food was. They’re a slightly sweet vegetable but cook up well. They can also be served a number of ways (cinnamon, parsley, Italian seasoning, etc.).

5. Green Beans or Green Peas

These are also both a great option for baby’s first food. Slightly sweet and vibrant color, these are a great appealing option for baby. Cook them and mash them with some water or breastmilk.

6. Squash

There are many types of squash; butternut, acorn, zucchini, pumpkin, etc. These can all be prepared a number of ways including baking or steaming. Then puree them with water in a blender.
